Valentine's Party

We had a great time celebrating Valentine's Day.  The class rotated through three stations; voting on 5th grade boxes/Valentine bingo, decorating a bag to hold their valentines, and cookie making/photo booth.  We were excited to see all the boxes the 5th grade students brought in.  You all did such an amazing job.

The winners were:
Most Hearty: Ollie
Most Creative: Maggie
Most Likely to Make Me Say Wow: Brady
Most Sparkle: Bailee
Most Likely to Be Sold Next Year at Hallmark: Brooke

Thanks so much for all the treats and parent volunteers.  We'd never be able to pull off such a great time without all of your help! Here are some pictures of our day.

What does reading look like?

Over the next few weeks we will be working on a video to walk the viewer through a day-in-the-life of a student in our cohort.  In anticipation of that, we thought we would explain how our Reading Workshop looks in our room this year .

To begin our workshop, all students in our cohort participate in a mini lesson taught by both Mrs. Petersen and Mrs. Ebert.  Today, our mini lesson focused on point-of-view.  Students helped create an anchor chart listing keywords to search for when trying to determine if the text is written in 1st, 2nd or 3rd person.

After our mini lesson, the kids have time for two 25 minute station.  One station is independent reading.  Every day, every student gets at least 25 solid minutes of independent reading.  The other station they participate in is either a teacher station or book club.  If a student meets with their book club for that day, they do not meet with the teacher and visa versa.

During the book club, students meet and discuss the book they are reading with other kids in their reading club.  They then take what they discuss and write in their reading binder.  The book clubs are held in the computer lab under the supervision of Mrs. K, our fantastic paraprofessional.

If they aren't scheduled to meet with their book club, the students have a teacher station.  In this station, they work with the teacher and a small number of students (groups are between 3 and 6 kids) and complete an activity that is tied to the mini lesson.

The workshop model helps to serve two main purposes.  The first, is that students become strong, independent readers in the independent station and book clubs  The second, is that students become stronger readers as they work on the strategies and skills in the teachers teach in their small groups and mini lessons.

Learning Update-Dec. 15-19

Math
5th Grade-Took the Unit 3 assessment.  Most of the kids did a great job!  Those that needed additional practice were given some extra time and then retook a portion of the assessment.  It's great to see kids persevere through some of the tougher math topics!  Next up, in Unit 4, we will be looking at comparing numbers using multiplication and division.
4th Grade-Students are working on using all four operations to compare numbers.  We have also started to review graphs and charts, and use their information to compare numbers.
3rd Grade-Students are working with telling time, elapsed time and reading charts and graphs.

Reading
This week in our reading groups we wrapped up our conversation about comparing and contrasting and started to take a peek into the idea of cause and effect.  It ties really nicely into our social studies unit!  Book clubs will have pages to read over the break next week.

Social Studies
We are diving into the causes of the Revolutionary War!  So far we have discussed the French and Indian War, the Sugar Act and the Stamp Act.  Next up, we will talk about how the colonists that weren't Loyalists reacted to the King's demands.

Writing
We are working diligently on our persuasive pieces.  Students took the time at the beginning of the week to write about a problem and a solution that they see around them.  They finished off the week with some peer reviewing.  Look for a special piece of writing to come home the day before break.

Special Thanks:
We would like to thank the volunteers that have been working in our room every week: Mrs. Oelhafen, Mrs. Maas, Mrs. Uelmen and Mrs Kreuser.  Your help is extremely appreciated!  We would also like to think the parents who have been able to come in and help during our parties and other special events.  It's so exciting for the kids to see these special people come in and work with us!
